ADACAS celebrates the launch of Australia’s first National Autism Strategy, announced by the Federal Government. This initiative represents a notable step forward in supporting and empowering autistic Australians. ADACAS hopes to see meaningful implementation of this strategy, and is heartened to see significant commitments being made to support autistic Australians.
What is the National Autism Strategy?
The strategy is Australia’s first national plan to improve life outcomes for autistic people across the country. Backed by $42.3 million in funding, it aims to create a more inclusive Australia where autistic people are understood, supported, and empowered to participate fully in all aspects of life.
Why is this strategy important?
For the almost 300,000 autistic Australians, this strategy acknowledges their experiences and challenges, particularly the common practice of ‘masking’ where autistic people feel they must hide their true selves to fit into a neurotypical world. The strategy was developed through consultation with autistic people, their families, carers and experts, ensuring it addresses real needs and experiences.
What will the strategy do?
The National Autism Strategy focuses on four main areas:
- Social Inclusion: Making sure autistic people feel welcomed and included in their communities
- Economic Inclusion: Creating better opportunities for employment and financial security
- Diagnosis, Services and Supports: Improving access to early diagnosis and ongoing support
- Health and Mental Health: Ensuring better healthcare access and mental health support
What are the key initiatives in the strategy?
- $19.9 million for peer support programs, connecting Autistic people with others who share their experiences
- $915,000 for community education to increase understanding and acceptance of autism
- $445,000 to help people access better information before and after diagnosis
- $915,000 to create more employment opportunities
- $12.2 million for translating research into practical improvements
- $2.8 million to better understand autism prevalence in Australia
What does this mean for the ACT community?
For our local community, the National Autism Strategy provides new opportunities for:
- Better support services
- Improved employment pathways
- Enhanced community understanding
- More inclusive spaces and places
- Stronger peer support networks
ADACAS welcomes these important changes and stands ready to help our community access these new opportunities.
